40 Days of Fitness

There seems to be a common theme with a few women lately...getting healthier. A couple of years ago Celeste Jones and a few other women spearheaded the Goobs ( Get Of Our Butts) challenge- it was a great motivator. We would publicly state what our challenge was for ourselves and once a week report whether we reached our goals or not. For some reason, the fear of public, anonymous humiliation was enough to motivate me more than our wooden paddles.

This year we thought we'd put a spin on 'Lent' . Nothing says religious sacrifice like exercise and healthy living right? lol-  Oh go with it! So if you are interested here is our little banner

Every Weds. I will comment if I have achieved my goals. If you don't have a blog but want to participate, shoot me an email wilma.barney@gmail.com and I will put your name and goals on my blog each week. I don't think I will actually make a post each week, but add a button to the side of my blog. Time will tell.

Now on to my unrealistic  goals.  I want to exercise everyday for 30 minutes, ( starting tomorrow of course).  I know me and if I say 3 times a week I will continually put it off.  I am better if I do it every day.  I have given up wine and pop ( soft drinks-sigh) for Lent.  I also pledge to drink 8 glasses of water a day minimum ( difficult for me as I am a camel) and eat 3 nutritious meals a day.  Ask anyone, this will be my biggest challenge.

My blood pressure is borderline, so Barney has been wanting me to exercise for a while now. I have been waiting for this winter to let up, but I have given up on that!

I also realize I am behind in writing posts, but I have managed to hurt myself ( nothing serious) and typing is not a great idea at the moment.  Hopefully I'll get some reprieve soon.  LOL...that makes me sound like I think you are DYING for me to write...

Here are some achievement 'stickers' or Non achievement stickers if you want to play along with us.  No pressure.  Just thought we'd share our idea in case you want to be healthy in the odd chance summer ever shows up!

Edit *** 1)  I am aiming to exercise for 40 Days, but the intent is for everyone to get involved for 40 Days.  If you say I am going to exercise 4 times in 40 days, that is up to you!  LOL

Edit 2) Maryanne said I didn't have enough FAIL 'stickers'...so here are two more.  Sheesh

  1. StrongMan and I are going to be eating healthier and doing more outside activities like biking and nature walks but I don't know if I am ready to proclaim myself to 40 days of consecutive fitness.

Good luck though!!! I am really glad I got off soda. Now I just drink tea and water with the occasional juice.

Sorry to hear you hurt yourself. I hope you will be feeling better soon!

    1. Good for you! Well *I* am doing 40 consecutive ( or attempting to) days of health and fitness. You can set your own goals ie: 3 times a week, if you want to.

    2. I really should... I know I should.... :) I'll get back to you... lol :)

    3. I drink seltzer water and add 1/4 cup of cranberry juice. It's like champagne. I love it. No calories in the seltzer, get the fizzy feeling without the guilt and I'm not consuming a lot of juice. Win win. :)

    4. Day one the water thing was fine. I was done drinking by 8 pm ish...Day two I wasn't done until 10 pm...MISTAKE..OMG...I was up 4 or 5 times peeing....urgh. Live and learn.

And Maryanne, your drink sounds like something I should drink pool side! lol With VODKA

      Delete
    5. If you ad VODKA to it then you'll be off your diet in no time at all. LOL Don't do it! Say NO.

    6. Ahhhhhhhhhh but I never SAID I was on a diet. Good grief woman I'd get in trouble for that! No I just said I had stopped drinking wine and pop...AND would eat 3 healthy meals a day.. I have been devouring cookies for the past 2 days!

  2. I'm in...starting next Monday, THAT sounds like commitment LOL I want to run a 1/2 marathon next year, so now is the perfect time to get started. My biggest issue is junk food, so I'm going to try to curb that!

Good Luck Wilma!! You can do it

    1. Thanks Jannelle. I have to tell you Day one I really didn't want to 'run'<- (hardy har har on the run part) the stairs, but I did...finally. Day two the thought of failing in my first week pushed me forward. Stupid pressure! lol. Day two was much more painful...LOL

My girlfriend always wants me to take up running. I don't know, I prefer brisk walking ( very brisk).
You can give up junk food...think of Easter Sunday as your big reward at the end of it!!!
      Good Luck to YOU!!

  3. Back to anonymous. For some reason, some blogs will NOT load on my tablet, sigh. They blink and sputter and make the thing flip out.

But it's me, Clara. This sounds like just what I need to get moving! When I get on a real computer, I'll figure out how to use your banner and set my goals. Okay, I'll probably email you and ask for help but I'd definately like to join the challenge!

    1. Don't think of yourself as Anonymous, think of yourself in NINJA MODE...it is way cooler that way !

To use the banner, right click and choose SAVE IMAGE AS...just remember where you saved it ( you can always choose desktop) . Then in layouts, choose add gadget. Choose Add Image. Drag the gadget box to wherever you want and presto!..If you want to add text follow the same instructions except choose the add text gadget.
No matter. You know where to find me chat, email or phone if you need me.
      Good luck with your challenge!!

  4. Ugh! Reluctantly, I am in. I made it last year exercising 36 days in a row, so I'll see if I can pull off 40.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Of course you can! Nothing like a little peer pressure, and fear of public failure. That is what has me going a grand total of 2 entire days in a row! Besides, you have the great outdoors to venture into...unless I decide to shovel ( with my tennis elbow) 4 feet of snow out of my backyard...I'm stuck inside. Basically quit being such a whimp! LOL

Happy to have you join in the 'fun' Leah!

  5. I'm in. As you know Wilma, I have found myself in a weight loss challenge with a certain HoH. And his name does not begin with Brice lol. So I MUST do this and do it well. I'm very happy I will have lots of company getting in shape!

    1. You know where I stand on your other challenge. I really want you to succeed for your health, but I hope you loose by just a hair for *HIS* benefit.
Just remember lifting a wine glass to your lips does NOT count as exercise! And if you don't win that challenge...it blows, but you'll survive without a massage...wink

  6. I'm in. My aim is 30 minutes on the infernal weigths machine daily, 3 - 5 km walk along the beach every second day and cut down the booze (hardest of the goals)

    1. HI DON!!!

Welcome. I will put your goals on the right side of my blog soon! So happy you delurked to get in shape. I am going to go for a 5 km walk today. Sadly NOT on a beach. I am excited that it will be a balmy -5 C here today!!!

I hear ya about the booze! This time of year the sun hits our backyard early afternoon, and it is so nice to sit on the snow in a lawn chair with a drink, and pretend I am somewhere ELSE. Oh well I guess the drink will be one of Maryanne's lovely concoctions without the Vodka :(

      Good luck to you sir!

  7. Can I give up exercise for forty days instead. It wouldn't really be giving it up since I don't really exercise but just in case I was thinking about it you know. So that will be my challenge.

  8. Count me in! I have cut out all sugar and carbs for the last 11 days, but this morning I gave in to a craving for a donut. It wasn't nearly as good as I'd hoped and it gave me a tummy ache. Plus, even though I initiated the change and it was my only slip up so far, I had to tell on myself and I got in trouble. So I won't be doing that again :-) This will be great extra motivation!

    1. Yay!

Wait, WHAT? No sugar or carbs? Man that would be more difficult that wine and pop ( LOL...at first I accidentally typed in pot).

  10. I am in. Started doing better on my exercises, but really need some accountability to make sure it is going to stick. Starting up an exercise chart in the next couple of days, because I do good on those. :) Thanks for doing this.

    1. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh, does your chart have stickers EsMay?

I didn't participate in your Spring Fling last year, but the GOOBs challenge really motivated me because I didn't want to have to publicly admit I screwed up. So far, as the stupid instigator this time, it is working. Sigh, I didn't think this through all the way...LOL!

      Good Luck EsMay!

  11. this sounds like great motivation...I have been wanting to do something similar on my blog just to post and make myself accountable - hoping making it public would be enough support. I will think upon it, whether or not I could do 40 consecutive days is unlikely...however, I have been making my own weekly goals and small steps towards being healthy. I gave up all sugar and carbs for a week to reboot my system and have been exercising more. In any case, I wish you success on your goals and am cheering you on. :-)

    1. Hey Terps.

I just wanted an END date to this challenge. That is the only reason for 40 Days. I didn't mean that everyone had to exercise for 40 days. The every day thing just works for me ( lol....riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight).

Good luck on whatever you decide!

  12. I am doing this too, Willie. I decided for Lent this year, I would faithfully follow the "Think Light" eating plan that works great and I want to exercise every day too. I am sick today and it was raining, so I am starting tomorrow too. I hope we can both be good Catholic girls and stick to it! Glad I am not alone in this!! I'll try to remember to post on my blog as we go along, but I may just come over here and post in your comments section on Wednesdays.... ;-)

    1. Oh GOD>>>not the Catholic Card Cygnet! LOL... We all know there is no such thing as a Good Catholic Girl- *wink*

So Hula to Steve then? I have done the stairs the past couple of days, but I am thinking my legs need a break today. I might break out the Hula Hoop, but the boys are home for spring break. This proves a bit of an issue as we live in a shoebox, and there is very little room to 'swing a cat' in here, much less have a middle age woman jiggle her stuff inside a hula hoop. Besides no need to traumatize the poor buggers!

Hope you are feeling better now. I know there is a lot of 'nasty' stuff ( besides exercising) going around.
      Good luck Cygnet!!!

    2. I have always thought the good Catholic girl is a bit of a come on with just a hint of truth...there are a lot of things that are "good" in the Catholic world in a bad sort of way...it is all about context (lololol). Don't get me started on the suggestiveness of the Easter symbols...hot, hot, hot!

Defnitely hula to Steve. It is warming up here, so running along the river is in too! Didja hear, there are actually "hooping" classes. I'm trying to find one around here, I thought that might be fun. Maybe there's one in your neck (or waist ;-)) of the woods?

I worked out with a Jillian Michaels DVD a few days ago and almost threw up, lol! Since my pants are starting to get just a bit too tight, I guess I have no choice but to join you. 2. OH a fitness fanatic? What in the world is THAT? lol
I hear stories ( personally I think they are more like myths) about women who get addicted to exercise. Never experienced that in my life. About the 10 minute mark of doing the stairs, I turn into a Long Shoeman...@#$% I hate this...@#$% I have another 20 !@#$ing minutes to go!!! I then even out for 5 minutes or so....then I am too exhausted to swear....I get a burst of energy for another few minutes...then back to swearing for the last 3 or so. I mean who wants to be addicted to THAT? Good times, Good times!

I shall add you to the Nonblogger-But Exerciser list as soon as ya send me your 'digits' Queenie.

  20. I am looking for an exercise program tailored for the out-of-shape woman in her peri-menopausal years. I am thinking something that relies heavily on the therapeutic use of dark chocolate and wine.....I don't need to be particularly healthy, but I want my @$$ to look good from a high vantage point.

    1. Well seeing how you already emphatically stated that you are not giving up WINE.....how about every time you feel like snapping at my favourite Cowboy ( who I am certain doesn't deserve it) you go for a walk. Also put your chocolate on the second floor. You'll be in shape in no time!

( did my comment about an innocent Ian get you huffing and puffing? That burns of calories too. I clean with vigor when I am angry! )

    2. Lillie...I saw a movie once which might have something you can use...the movie was called "Cold Turkey" If was about a town trying to win a bunch of money by giving up smoking. The guy who organized it (Dick Van Dyke) was the pastor of the church and didn't smoke, so while he was rallying the town, he took up smoking and was firmly addicted to cigarettes by the time it was time to quit. Every time he wanted to smoke for the rest of the movie, he made love to his wife. Think Ian would buy in? Every time you want to eat something for the next 40 days you shouldn't you make love...anything? It IS exercise (sort of) and might include wine and chocolate if you work it right... :-) Ever helpful Cygnet checking in!

  21. Hi Willie, giggling here at some of the comments above. Love the new banner and background.

This is a great idea! My main exercise is walking 11 flights of stairs a few times a day at work, which, of course makes weekends rest days ... but then again weekend equals housework, gardening etc. That counts as exercise right? :)
